About

When I was five I had my first Barbie doll. It was Swim Barbie with only a swimsuit as clothing, but it was mine . With 3 sisters and a brother, having something for myself was a wonderful feeling. I used to invent scenarios for my Barbie doll where she would travel, entertain and model in fashion shows.  That is when I started making outfits for her.  After a year or so I got up the nerve to put on fashion shows and use my sisters’ toys as the audience.  My mom, who is a true fashionista, came to me and said “I want you to come with me.”  She took me into the dining room and sat me in front of her pink Atlas sewing machine and she taught me how to sew. And, I fell in love with the process of creating things to wear, to use, and to just create.

By the time I was in high school I was designing and making suits, and prom dresses for me, and sewing items for family.  I was happy doing the thing I enjoyed most.  I eventually went off to Hampton University to study Fashion Merchandising, but I wound up making a practical decision to get a business degree instead.  And while that business degree has served me well for years, I have missed the thrill of making magic with my hands.  Now that I’m older (I said older not “old”) I have been easing back into the craft centric side of my brain.  In the last year I have made 3 quilts, mug mats, dresses, upcycled shirts, pants, eyeglass cases, and other fabric items. I joined a local quilting guild, The African American Quilters of Baltimore. Great real folks, amazing fiber artist, creative crafters and the most uplifting group that anyone could want. The members of this group have had an incredible impact on my life.

With all of the changes in my life that have led me back to sewing, I have been moved to start a blog and get reacquainted with my first love.  If you are reading this, I am inviting you to come on the ride with me.  Teach me when you can.  Learn from me when you can and let’s exchange ideas about this whole wonderful world of creativity.  I’ll be posting pictures and videos.  I am straight up soliciting tips and advice from you guys and I’ll share whatever I learn or experience with everyone.

And again, to borrow from the brilliant Brenda “singer songwriter” Russell… Sew good Sew right…  (Hope she doesn’t mind that I borrowed that.
